M036   Two up Time 

            After a hard day on the range two cowboys Joe and Eddie sit around a campfire and play 'two up' with the stakes starting at $10 and doubling with each throw of the coins.  At the first throw the winner receives $10 and at the second the winner receives $20 and so on up to $2560 on the final throw.

            Q.  If Joe won $1270 how much did Eddie win. 

            ANS: $3840  

M037   Desert Ordeal

            Abdul the Arabian sheik rode the fastest camel in the desert.  Two intrepid             explorers Eddie Sandune and Bart Heatrash hired Abdul to get them across the  hot, dry and thirsty desert which was 720Km wide.  Unfortunately although Abdul could travel three times as fast as either man he could only carry one passenger.

            Q.  How far did Abdul carry Eddie on his camel into the desert before going      back to pick up Bart.

            ANS: 240Km

M038            Student Marbles 

The students in Year Five at Dookes Primary School had an average of  six marbles each.  However a new student who had 13 marbles transferred into the class.  The class average is now seven.

            Q.  How many students are there in the class now? 

            ANS: 7 students 

M039   Age Old Wonder 

Little Stevie Wunder was the whizz kid of the junior mathematics class.  At the school anniversary he calculated that the school was six times his age but in eight years time it will only be four times his age.

            Q.  How old is Stevie? 

            ANS: 12 years old

M040            Decimal Bonus 

The General Manager of the Supersuckem Vacuum Cleaner Company each year distributes a company bonus to his employees.  The District Manager receives 10% of the total annual bonus who gives 10% of it to the Area Manager.  Similarly 10% of the amount received by the Area manager is paid to the Sales Manager.  The Sales Manager receives $1152 less than the amount the Area Manager received from the District Manager.

            Q.  How much was the total annual bonus? 

            ANS: $128,000 

M041   Ages Multiplied 

Melville Marmalade amateur mathematician calculated that his father was twice         his age and grandfather four times his age.  If the ages are multiplied together they equal 64,000.

            Q.  How old is Melville? 

            ANS: 20 years old 

M042   River Rowing 

            Bertie Oarsman canoes on the river which flows at five Km/h.  In the direction of the river he can row six times as fast as he can against it.

            Q.  How fast can he row on still water? 

            ANS: 7 Km/h 

M043   Ages Past

Con Undrum was looking at his family album and noticed the date of birth of his daughter Millie.  He calculated that if he added her age to his year of birth it would come to 1920.  However his age added to her year of birth was 1960. Con is three times as old as Millie.

            Q.  What year is it now? 

            ANS: 1940  

M044            Marble Contest 

Two schoolboys Peter and Paul were playing marbles in the school playground.        They both started with the same number of marbles and played a contest which Peter won.  Peter ended up with 10 more marbles than Paul.

            Q.  How many marbles did Peter win in the contest? 

            ANS: 5  ( Peter wins 5, Paul loses 5 : difference =10) 

M045   The Cost of Wine 

            Teacher Con Undrum gave this puzzle to his students.  "A bottle of wine costs $10. The wine is worth nine dollars more than the bottle."

            Q.  How much was the bottle worth? 

            ANS: 50c 

M046            Profitabull 

Tommy Trader owned a pawn shop in downtown Burgesville.  He paid $15 for a watch and sold it for $16 and some time later bought the same watch for $17 and sold it for $18.

            Q.  How much profit did he make? 

            ANS: $2 

M047            Birthday Lollies  

            Pamela R. Iddle gave a birthday party for her daughter Sarah and invited fifteen children to attend.  She shared 143 lollies such that each boy received nine and each girl received ten lollies.

            Q.  How many boys and how many girls were there? 

            ANS: 7 boys , 8 Girls  

M048   The Price of Lollies 

            E. Lizzy Beth went to the store to buy lollies.  The Chocos cost twice as much as the Allsorts.  She purchased 20 Chocos and 5 Allsorts but if she had bought 5 Chocos and 10 Allsorts she would have saved $2.50.

            Q.  What is the price of each type of lolly? 

            ANS: Chocos 20c, Allsorts 10c 

M049            Gambling with Marbles 

Two school boys Snowy White and Blacky Knight had a certain number of marbles each.  After their first game of a 'Keeps Competition' Snowy gave three marbles to Blacky so that they now had the same number of  marbles. 

            They played another game and Blacky won his three marbles back.

            On the third game Blacky won and received three marbles from Snowy and he now had three times as many marbles as Snowy.

            Q.  How many marbles did each have at the beginning.

            ANS: Snowy 15, Blacky 9 

M050   Profit or Loss 

            Earnest Trader owned a pawn shop in the Main St. Arcade.  He purchased two       watches and sold them for $500 each.  On one he made a 25% loss and on the other a 25% profit.

            Q.  How much money did he gain or lose? 

            ANS: $25 loss. 

M051   Mrs. Hubbards Apples 

            Mrs. Hubbards went to the fruit shop and purchased some apples.  She used half making a pie and then went back to the shop and purchased half as many apples as she had left.  There were 27 apples altogether now.

            Q.  How many apples did she purchase at the start? 

            ANS: 36 apples 

M052   A Speedy Run 

            Eric Speedhog driving a Porche in the annual Cottonball Speed Run drove the          first 600 Km in three hours.  He had some trouble on the next 1200 Km and could only average 100 Km/h over this section.

            Q.  What is the overall average speed? 

            ANS: 120 Km/h
