L001    Coloured Houses  

            Teacher Archibald B. Teaser gave his class this puzzle.  "In my street Mr.          Green, Mr. Grey, and Mr. Brown live in 3 houses painted green, grey, and brown."  He gave 4 clues.

            1. No-one lives in a coloured house as his name suggests.

            2. Mr. Brown is a vegetarian.

            3. Meat is eaten by the man in the green  house.

            4. Mr. Grey has pimples.

            Q. Who lives in the grey house?  

            ANS:  Mr. Brown  

L002    An Intrepid Challenge. 

            Captain Intrepid of the Star Ship Invincible crash landed on Planet Zenon.  She was taken prisoner by the evil Emperor Aonax and taken to the imperial court.  Aonax loved to give challenges and said to Capt. Intrepid " There are three men before you, one which always tells the truth, one always tells lies, and the  other tells the truth or lies: You have three questions to ask and if you determine correctly who they are, you will be released."  The three men Al, Bob and Col stood side by side in that order.

            She asked the following questions.

                        To Al: "Who stands next to you?"

                                    "One who always tells the truth" Al replied.

                        To Bob: "Who are you?"

                                    " The one who speaks truth or lies" was the answer.

                        To Col: "Who is next to you?"

                                    " The one who only speaks lies" came the reply.

            Immediately Capt. Intrepid knew what each man was and was released             leaving Aonax rather puzzled.

            Q: Can you determine who the men are?.  

            ANS: Al = T or L, Bob = L, Col = T  

L003    Space Ship Challenge 

            The spaceship Challenge blasted its way off the planet Zenon on its way to        investigate a strange and mysterious star.  The crew consisted of a captain,   pilot, engineer, navigator, and doctor who's names were Mr. Bossman, Mr. Rudder, Mr. Motor, Mr. Compass, and Mr. Pill. No-0ne follows the profession as their name suggests.  The engineer told Mr. Bossman that the pilot and the doctor play chess.  After arriving at their destination Mr. Compass and Mr. Rudder assisted the captain and the doctor into their space suits.

            Q.  Who is the captain.  

            ANS: Mr. Pill

L004    Attenshun 

            In the local grandad's army there are four officers Mr. Sergeant, Mr. Lieutenant, Mr. Major and  Mr. Colonel who have the ranks of sergeant,   lieutenant, major, and colonel. 

            No-one has a rank as their name suggests.

            Mr major orders the sergeant to go and buy the lunches.

            The sergeant purchases sandwiches for Mr. Colonel and a pie for the lieutenant.

            Q.  Who is the Major?  

            ANS: Mr. Colonel  

L005    True or False  

            Alice Lookinglass after being attacked by pirates and shipwrecked found           herself on the Isle of Enchantment.  "Where am I" ? she asked a friendly fairy.  "You are in the enchanted maze" replied the fairy.  The fairy warned Alice that if she followed the path covered with beautiful lilac flowers she would come to Decision Land.  In Decision Land there are two countries called True and False.   The inhabitants of True only speak the truth and False inhabitants only speak lies.  Both inhabitants freely move between the two countries and there is no way of identifying them. 

            Alice skipped down the lilac road and very soon she met a farmer standing near        the road.  To determine in which country True or False she was in, smart little Alice asked one four word question requiring a yes or no answer.

            Q.  What is the question?  

            ANS: Do you live here?  

L006    House Cars 

            There were five houses in the street, each a different colour and a different         number of cars parked in front.  The most cars any house had was five. 

            There was more than one car at the blue house.

            The brown house never had one or five cars.

            There was one more car at the green house than the blue house.

            The red house did not have two cars and had two less than the yellow house.

            Q.  How many cars did each house have?  

            ANS: 1- red, 2- brn, 3- y, 4- bl, 5- gn.  

L007    Which Car is Next 

            Four cars were parked side by side at the Downtown Shopping Plaza.  The       Ford was next to the Holden but not next to the Mazda.  The Mazda was not next to the Toyota.

            Q.  Which car is next to the Toyota?

            ANS: Ford.

L008    Four for Tennis 

            At the ladies tennis day four women were named Smith, Jones, Davis and Ashe        and whos first names were Meg, Liz, Bev and Helen but not necessarily respectively.  During the match programme noone played twice.  Liz defeated Jones in the first game and Davis defeated Bev in the second.  The two winners played in the final which was umpired by Helen while Smith served drinks.  Liz lost the final. 

            Q.  Who won the final?  

            ANS: Meg Davis.  

L009    Coloured Car Rally 

            Four drivers competing in a car rally were Mr. Smith, Miss Jones, Mr. White     and Mrs. Black. Each had a different coloured car namely red, green, blue and  yellow but not necessarily respectively.  The blue car was twice as far as the  yellow which was twice as far as the red which was twice as far as the green car.  Miss jones was ahead of Mr. Smith but not by twice as much.  Mr. White was exactly 100 Km ahead of Mrs. Black.

            Q.  What colour car did Mr. Smith drive?  

            ANS: Green.  (Bl.-Jones, Yell- White, Rd-Black, Gn-Smith)  

L010    Who Whos Wealthy 

            There were four multimillionaires named Hudson, James, Charles and Henry  with their names in the Who Whos magazine.  The magazine rated them in this way. Henry had more money than James.  Hudson and Charles combined  wealth was more than than James and Henry combined.  However Hudson and  Henry's combined accumulation of wealth was not as much as Charles and  James combined.

            Q. Who is the wealthiest?  

            ANS: Charles then Henry, James and Hudson.  

L011    Butcher, Baker, Who 

            Mrs Smith, Mr. Young, Miss Jones and Mr. Ford are neighbours who's first      names are Fred, Betty, Pam and Jim but not necessarily respectively.  They   work as a butcher, baker, grocer and chemist.  Miss Jones partners the baker in a game of cards with Jim and Betty.  Mr. Ford lives two houses to the left of  Pam who is neighbours with the butcher and Fred.  Betty drives a Holden car while Mr. Young uses public transport, the chemist has a Mazda while the grocer walks her dog.

            Q.  Who is the butcher?  

            ANS: Betty Smith  

L012    A Snapshot 

            The Snapshot Camera Club recently held their elections for the executive           committee.  Only those positions which were contested were voted upon by the   club members.  The new committee consisted of Tom, Dick, Harry, Helen and Judy.  The positions were President, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity Officer and Social Convener.

            The secretary and publicity officer both received equal votes at the elections.

            Helen and Dick were nominated unopposed to their positions and did not          contest any other position.  Harry and Helen were elected to the positions of  secretary and treasurer.  At the dinner the President gave her speech.  

            Q.  Who is the publicity officer?
