- Introduction
Throughout the year there are competitions such as International Speech, Humorous Speech, Evaluation, and Table Topics.
These start at club level and progress through Area, Division and to District. Only the International Speech competition, as the name suggests goes on to become a world wide competition.
However there are competitions which can be held in the club which can add variety to meetings and a trophy can be presented to the winners.
Here are some suggestions.
- Golden Bull
1. A humorous impromptu speech.
2. Contestants draw topics from hat.
3. Time 90 - 120 seconds.
4. Buzzer at 120 seconds.
5. Judged by all non participating members.
- Tall Tales
1. A prepared humorous speech.
2. Contestants own subject choice.
3. Contestants draw for speaking order.
4. Timing 2 - 3 mins.
5. Lights Green 2 mins, Amber 2 1/2 mins,
Red 3 mins.
6. Disqual < 1 1/2 or > 3 1/2 mins.
7. Judged by all non participating members.
- Famous Speech
1. Read or recite a speech given by a famous person.
2. Draw for speaking order.
3. Max 3 minutes buzzer at 3mins.
4. Judged by all non participating members.
- Mystery Speech
1. Present an impromptu speech about a mystery.
2. Outline the mystery and if desired provide a solution.
3. Can be plausible, impossible, strange or odd.
4. Contestant draws topic from hat at lectern.
5. Max 3min green 2m, amb 2.5m, red 3m & buzzer.
6. Judged by all non participating members.
- Toast Competition
1. Present a toast to the club.
2. The contestants own selection of subject
3. Draw for speaking order.
4. Time max 2 minutes and warning buzzer at 2 mins.
6. Judged by all non participating members.
The rules of the above contests can be varied to suit the club members.
